Sweet Potato Chocolate Chip Cookies

What is it about chocolate chip cookies?  Aren’t they just, like the ultimate comfort food?


It starts with the dough.  Oh cookie dough, a delicacy all on it’s own.  A finger swipe, spoon full, bowl lick.  It’s just all so good.

Then comes the baking.  You put the batch in the oven.  How good does your house smell right now?  I’ve heard baking cookies is a trick of realtors, put a batch in the oven, make everyone feel at home, sell the house in no time!

Finally, comes the cookie itself.  Warm, soft, chewy, fresh out of the oven.  Who can wait for cooling?!  Crazy people thats who!  I usually have a face full of melted chocolate chips before the oven is even turned off.

So chocolate chip cookies are the perfect food right?  Weeeell, not so much.  They’re well you know, not all that great for you.  wahh waahhhhhh

Well, until now that is!

Ok, thats a bit of a stretch.  These cookies, I gotta admit, aren’t exactly a salad.  But they are a lot better for you than regular cookies.  So while, you cant have, like 11.  1 or 2 is definitely pretty guilt free!  Small battles right?

I’m going to give you 2 recipes, basically the most “cookie” like version, and a healthier version.  You can decide which on to make, but here’s some help.

Version 1- Shown in this pic is much softer than a regular cookie.  It’s a bit more delicate in texture, probably wouldn’t hold up too well thrown in a baggie in your purse.  But it’s also SUPER healthy!  No flour, no sugar, nothin!

Version 2- Has a touch of both flour and brown sugar.  The flour make it a bit sturdier of a cookie.  And the sugar, well makes it sweeter.  Ummm, that may have been obvious?  Personally I like version 2 better, mostly because it’s sweeter.  But here’s an idea, try both!  More cookies to love, and more plates that look like this…

Sweet Potato Chocolate Chip Cookies

Version 1- the healthiest
Serves: 14
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes- washed
  • ½ cup old fashioned oats- divided
  • 4-5 dates
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ⅓ cup chocolate chips
  1. Preheat oven to 350*
  2. Microwave potatoes until a fork glides in and out easily- approx 8-10 minutes
  3. Let cool completely to room temperature
  4. In a food processer add cooked potatoes, ¼ cup of the oats, dates, vanilla, salt, and baking soda and egg.
  5. Process until smooth
  6. Transfer to bowl and add chocolate chips
  7. Spray cookie sheet with olive oil spray or Pam
  8. Place spoonful size dallops on to pan- approx 2 inches apart
  9. You should get about 14 cookies
  10. Bake- sart checking cookies for doneness at around 10 minutes. Mine took about 12 to be perfect!
For Version 2- the more "cookie" like version- sweeter and a bit sturdier

Simply add ¼ cup flour and ¼ cup loosely packed brown sugar to the batter. This will change the per cookie calorie count to 75 calories. Not too shabby still

Personally, my favorite version is with a ¼ cup of brown sugar, but no flour. It's a sweeter cookie, without the calories of the flour, and I like the nice soft texture! This version is 67 calories per cookie!
